March 25th 2009

Dear Respect member / supporter, As Spring is now upon us, it is time to focus on our Council Election campaigns. Time to spring into action, you might say! Time it is. At the Selection Meeting in February, the Bristol membership voted to stand a Respect candidate in up to 5 wards this June. This is now confirmed as:

Lockleaze (priority ward) Jerry Hicks as candidate

• Easton (priority ward) – Mo Ouammi as candidate

• Lawrence Hill Prince Abdul Assiz as candidate

• Ashley Jo Benefield as candidate

The campaigns start in earnest from this weekend (March 28/29). We have produced a fantastic full-colour leaflet for Lockleaze, which will also be the basis for leaflets for the other wards from April. To begin though, our aim is to get this out to every one of the 5000 households in the Lockleaze ward by next week! We need as many people as possible to come out for an hour or 2 over this weekend in order to make this happen.

Please contact Jerry Hicks on 07817 827912 to give details of when you can make it. Many of you will have already had emails and text messages about this – if you haven’t then please give us your email or mobile number and we’ll add you to the “frequent updates” list. There is also another way you can help. Everything that we do in Bristol Respect is funded by us – the local members and supporters. It is indeed our party. So we need everyone to please give a donation over the next month to build up the election campaign fund. This money is used to produce the leaflets that go out to every house in the areas where we stand, to tell people that there is an alternative to the same old politics – a chance for real change. Finally, if you want to get involved in other forms of fundraising, please do let us know.

The next members meeting is earlier than usual. Due to Easter it will be the first Monday of the month (Mon 6th April) not the usual 2nd Mon. We have a brilliant speaker lined up – Mohamed el Hadaad from the Viva Palestina convoy. Mohamed has just returned from driving an aid truck from Bristol to Gaza, and will offer an eye witness account of his experience: April members’ meeting – with Mohamed el Hadaad from Viva Palestina Monday 6th April 2009, 7.30pm – 9pm At [Note – not at Malcolm X Centre this month] Yours in support, Nick Smith – Treasurer of Bristol Respect 07725 209828 [on behalf of Bristol Respect Steering Group]
